Hi everyone.

I had my brother, who's a whiz kid w/ Linux put Ubuntu Linux on my P1120 in the hopes that it would run faster. Well, it didn't and so now we've been trying to restore everything back to the original.

Unfortunately we wiped the drive clean. I do have my backup PQI files saved on my desktop however.

I don't know how he did it but he's managed to make the attempt to reload the PQI files onto the system only to be learn that one of them basically isn't even recognized and the other gets through most of install then has an error.

He has however managed to put XP Pro back on the system. Now I'm wondering if we can take it to the next step and attempt the restore again.

So, I'm not sure if these are the right questions but I was thinking we would need to know a few things from the experts.

1) What size was the original DISE partition
2) Wouldn't it be important to have the drive partioned exactly the same as it was before?
3) Where can I pick up the DISE software to perform the backup - or can we just use something else?
4) Am I missing anything here?

Thanks!!!

The reason you may be accruing little interest in this post is that a.) traffic is really down these days and b.) we have had this problem here a LOT and it is very hard to solve. Backed-up or transplanted PQI files rarely survive intact enough for the Fujitsu-supplied software to recognise. Back in 2002 / 2003 the easy answer was to upgrade the stripped down Fujitsu-supplied Drive Image Special Edition activating software. If you spent $50 or so, the full-package Drive Image WOULD recognise the moved/transplanted PQI file and activate it. Some poster here actually had to inform us of this - it wasn't announced anywhere. By the time I got around to making that purchase myself, Powerquest ("PQ") had been sold to Symantec and turned into "Ghost". No one has reported back here as to whether or not Ghost does the same job of file recognition that Drive Image did. Out of the dozens of people who have tried to "wing it" without the paid-for software (now no longer available) less than a half-dozen have succeeded and reported back here. People have spent many hours trying - and it is all recorded in the archives. Use the forum search function with keywords like: PQI, DISE, partition, 1120 and so on. Click the search one time with "ARCHIVES" checked and once without. There are a lot of good ideas, and the occasional success. It depends on how much time you have to spend and on your own level of PC troubleshooting expertise. Other than that, Fujitsu will re-image the thing for $200 or so. Cheers - NS.

Actually, I have had very little problems with using a DVD copy (or my Network stored copy) of the Factory.PQI to restore people's drives.

As long as you set up the partitions correctly before running the DISE floppies, it really is no trouble - or at least hasn't been for me,and I've done it multiple times on multiple machines.

This is what is reproducable for me. You need the DISE Floppy set (2 disks) a USB enclosure and another working XP/Win2K machine.

The Factory.PQI is 1,065,472 kb - so it has to be on a DVD.

Win XP with DISE:

#1: Attach blank HDD to functional DVD Capable WinXP/Win2K PC with USB cord/case.
#2: Using Computer Management/Disk Management (Right Click on My PC, choose “Manage”, ”Disk Management”) Create 2 partitions.
Partition #1 should be a Primary Partition, NTFS, as large as you want it to be. Quick Format OK
Partition #2 should be a Extended Partition, Logical Drive, FAT32, at least 2x the size of the Factory.PQI file. I suggest a min of 5gb. Quick Format OK.
#3: Name the FAT32 partition DISE_BACKUP, create a folder called PQImage and copy the Factory.PQI file there.
#4: Unplug the HDD from the USB and install it in the P1120.
#5: Use the DISE Floppy pair (it needs 2 disks) to restore the Factory.PQI.
#6: Set up Windows. After that, you can install XPSP2. (I put the XP-SP2 executable in the Shared Documents folder). Get the Microsoft Updates.
#7: Make a USER pqi of Windows with Updated SP2 installed. Burn this (probably 3 files) to DVD.
#8: Install everything else, then make another USER.pqi set if you want to.

NOTE: After using the DISE “Restore from Factory” option, the DISE_BACKUP partition “disappears” if you created a Primary partition rather than an Extended partition. I do not know why. To correct this, you need to go back into Disk Management, delete the DISE_BACKUP partition, then recreate it. You can then use the floppies to create USER.pqi files that can be saved and extracted to CD for future use. As far as I can determine, the Windows version of DISE will only function correctly AFTER creating a USER backup with the Floppies if you have to rebuild the DISE_BACKUP partition in this way, so it behooves you to use “Extended Partition” when creating it.

Amazingly well put. If I EVER get a good reason to try these instructions - well - in that case you shall have the ultimate test of whether or not they are idiot-proof. I'll surely let you know, should that occasion come up.

Meanwhile: double-Cheers!! to the efforts of MisterMisanthrope.

Thanks.

YOu could always use that old 30gb Toshiba left over after upgrading to the Hitachi drive to try it out on...

But I'm pretty sure anyone can do it this way. I did it on 4 different brands of drive and 3 different capacities. Toshiba 30, Hitachi 60, IBM 30 and Toshiba 4gb, with both USB-1 and USB-2 drive enclosures.

Now if I could only get Win2K to install without borking the MBR... (another project I'm working on...)
